Healthiness is an international synonym with well-being. If talking about healthy living, you are talking about ways to keep your body and mind healthy. If you feel that your life is full of unhappiness and illness, it’s time to start looking at ways to improve the quality of your life. If you are not happy or if your life is full of illness, it’s a sign that you need to do something to be healthy.
In order to assess your healthiness, you need to have a routine that involves a healthy eating regime, regular exercise, relaxation and adequate sleep. The first factor that assesses healthiness is your breathing pattern. If you breathe slowly and deeply through your nose and mouth, you are breathing in a healthy way. People with a normal range of breathing patterns (breathing in a relaxed manner) are considered to be healthy.
Secondly, assess your emotional healthiness by judging how much energy and happiness you have in your life. People with higher levels of energy and happiness live relatively longer. But if you are not happy, you will not have the energy to live long. Similarly, if you are feeling unhappy, you might not have enough energy to make it through your day.
Your general state of health can also be assessed with the help of a healthiness index. The Index of Healthiness (H.I.H) is designed by Isabel De Los Rios, M.D., and was created by the National Center for Chronic Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It contains questions on physical health, mental health, social support, essential nutrient intakes, sleep quality, eating habits, exercise habits, depression, anxiety, stress, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. People who score high on the H.I.H tend to be very healthy and are not at all likely to suffer from chronic diseases. People who score low on the H.I.H tend to be very unhealthy, and are likely to develop serious health conditions such as diabetes and coronary artery disease.
Finally, assess your healthiness by checking whether you feel tired or fatigued throughout the day. If you feel tired or fatigued even when you have had enough rest, this could indicate that you are not at optimal health. Furthermore, people who have lower ratings for their self-rated healthiness are more likely to get sick during the course of the year. Therefore, if you want to maintain a healthy level of healthiness even when you are not at your best, it is important to work on improving your self-rated healthiness.
To sum up, to assess your level of healthiness we need three key elements: being mentally healthy, being physically healthy, and having a good balance between these two elements. As pointed out above, self-rating is an important tool for assessing your healthiness, but it can only go so far. Therefore, in order to ensure that you improve your healthiness you need to make the most of the resources around you – family, friends, colleagues, the internet, etc. Above all, though, never forget that your health depends largely on the state of your mind. Be happy with yourself and let your healthiness guide you!
